Noisy Air Conditioner - Whirlpool 6000 btu

Question:
Recently I bought a 6000 btu window a/c, Whirlpool, for my bedroom.
Works fine, but the thing is noisey as heck. Not the humming noise, thats fine, but there is another sound, like a bunch of metal shavings are rolling around inside, and its pretty irritating. Is this normal?
Or should I take it back?

Answer:
Window airconditioners are designed to throw the condensate up against the compressor coil. This water is chilled since it comes off the evaporator coil. When it hits the hot compressor coil, it cools it and helps the unit's efficiency, The unit's fan is used to force the water against the coil and it makes a peculiar noise. From your description, I feel sure this is what you hear. If this is your problem, you might carefully make some holes in the bottom of the unit to drain the water. Be sure the unit is sloped downward toward the rear.
