Question:
I'm in the early planning stages of a garge/WORKSHOP of about 24 X 32, that
will not be attached to my current house. I need to heat and cool this
building as I live in Southern Indiana. I'm need ideas on how to heat and
cool thi sbuilding. I'm considering a radiant floor system for heating and
a window air conditioner for the summer. I'm an instructor at a university
and have my summers off so cooling will be used more than the heating. Any
thoughts?
Answer:
My shop is a small 14x26 and have no heat or air in the summer. This summer
if you were in there for 10-15 minutes you were soaked! So if I wanted to
work on anything I'd start in the morning before it got to hot then waited
till evening to go back..... ok, sometimes I just sweated it out for
awhile.
But being winter is approaching I wanted to get some kind of heat out there
so I could mess around on cold day's. No room for a wood stove, kerosen
heater can stink to much, same goes for a torpedo heater, stinks and burn
the eyes.
So, I have two options left.... buy a used trailer furnace for about $100
and install (pretty easy) but again don't really have the room. So I
bought a 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 BTU ( low, med, high) portable forced air
propane gas heater. You can connet a 20 lb propane tank to it and it will
run for about 14 hours. Of course this will last me for awhile being I'm
not usually out there for long periods anyways. If I feel that I do need
more time then the 14 hours I might connect a line to our 120 Gal (not 100
lb) propane tank and run it off of that. Being you probably want a
permanent heat source you could always install a gas furnace, a wall
mounted furnace, etc. I would stay away from the "ventless" gas heaters
only for the fact I seen two in use and they both turned the walls black
with soot as well as everything else. But for me the small portable gas heater probably
work fine.
