Question:
Anybody ever seen a boat air conditioner that uses an engine/belt driven
compressor? I need one for use while underway (only) and can't spare the
power for a conventional electrically powered unit..
Answer:
Your best bet would be a self contained unit that is designed to be ducted.
conversion vans often use these for rear air conditioning. The units are
relatively small, mount under the back seat, and connect through ducting to
the ventilation system. This type of unit wouldn't be too hard to install
and only requires a minimum of air circulation around them. Note that these
are 12 volt units.
Another consideration is that a self contained unit is often less prone to
leaks because you don't have the flex between engine mounted compressor and
chassis mounted evaporator, receiver, condenser, etc.
