roof-mounted rv air conditioner maintenance

Question:
How do you go about replacing the gasket between a roof mounted a/c and the roof of an RV? Seems that the a/c creates a slight depression in the roof that then collects water after a rain storm, and I assume that over time the gasket will fail. Anyone have experience in replacing the gasket? Is it a Do It Yourself project, or better left to a RV service center?

Answer:
The job is really a "diy" project- not dificult at all. As far as the roof sag- fixing it depends on the construction of the roof- best case is a "loose" roof- just stick 1X shims between the roof metal and rafters- worst case, unrepairable, I've been known to put
3/4" plywood, then cover that with aluminum, just to raise the A/C.

Immersion will not harm the gasket, and as a matter of fact,
Dometic recommends using two gaskets to raise the A/C if the roof sags.

Personally, I do not use any type of caulk on the gasket- gaskets usually last between 5-7 years before they get too compressed, and with caulk on them, it makes them very hard to remove, plus, I've never had a problem with my replacement leaking (knock wood).
