Question:
I'm going to be buying an air-conditioner for only one room, about 10' x 12'.
Any suggestions about what to look for, or has anyone bought one recently that
was economical to buy and use?

Window AC? You should be able to get a decent one in the 5000 / 6000
btu range for under $250. Almost all of them are very efficient.
Manual controls are better IMO, and look for at least two speed
settings and possibly a fresh air vent. Room side fan should stay on
all the time while cooling. Without that, light sleepers tend to wake
up as the unit cycles. Listen to the sound, some models are much
quieter than others. Be sure to mount it correctly so that the window
frame doesn't stay wet with condensate. The cost of repairing the
frame could easily be more than the cost of the AC
