Question:
I am interested in the Delonghi Penguino air conditioners. These are
thr windowless portable units. They seem to be useful, but I would
any comments or advise on these units in particular.
Answer:
You are in a building where you are not allowed to have a regular
sash or casement window air-conditioning unit installed;
You have very little natural light in the room and don't want to
reduce that light by installing a window air-conditioner. With a
Penguino you just have a hose running from the cooling located inside
your room to one of the window panes (which will need to be replaced
with a special pane with flange to receive the hose).
Penguino engineering leaves something to be desired, and the
third-company providing NYC service under maintenance several years
ago tried to cheat me. (A different company may be used now, but I
suggest you check further for reliability.);
During the summer, you have to flush the system several times a
week with a strong acid so that it doesn't clog. This is a MAJOR
nuisance. Penguino's are at least three times the expense of a
standard window-based air conditioner.
