Question:
I would like to get an air conditioner, but do not want to stick it in the
window because my windows open out rather than up. I think the fit would be
difficult. Would the air conditioner work just sitting in the room with the
drip tube placed in a bucket?
Answer:
It sounds as though you may have casement windows. There are certain models
of air conditioners that are designed for this type of window, tall and slim
rather than short and wide.
An air conditioner that is made to be placed in a window or some other type
of opening to the outdoors isn't going to work properly if just placed in a
room without otherwise installing it.
There are some air conditioners that are made to be portable and just roll
up to a window. I've only seen them in catalogues.
an air conditioner pumps heat out of the room, and expels the extracted
heat outside, along with additional heat caused by inefficiencies in the
system. Running a normal air conditioner inside would have some cooling if
you're right in front of it, otherwise it will act like a 1500W+ space
heater, and heat up the room as a whole.
Some portable models exist that have a flexible tube that you can run to the
window, then presumably you could hobble something together to get a
relatively tight seal, so not too much heat can get in.
