Question:
I have seen portable AC units that are self-contained (minus the
exhaust tube), but I wonder how well these work. Some are advertised
as waterless.
The room gets pretty darn hot, so I wonder if a split system would be
better. How well do those work, and how much do they cost to install?
Would I need an electrician to run an extra circuit etc?
Answer:
I had already made a deal for central air conditioning,
which is really what I needed for my whole house. But I did sell the
unit for $500 which was still a steal for the person as well.
But the moral of this story is, DO NOT waste your time, they are all
poor performers and lousy.
But, I totally agree with the other poster and know several poeple
with true split ductless air conditioners, and they love them, but be
prepared to pay between $1200-$3000 for the unit. And consider
central air, I paid $5800 for a very nice Carrier system complete with
all ductwork installed, which I felt was a very fair price, and they
did excellent work.
