Question:
I'm looking into gettting a portable generator for RV use.
It will not be mounted in the motorhome - rather, stored in a utility
trailer I will tow.
I won't be using it when underway (although I'd like to!)
Looking for 4000watt output that can run at least 5 hours on a tank of gas.
I've looked (web sites) at Onan, Generac, Honda, Yamaha, and
Kawasaki.....and I'm starting to get dizzy
What are you folks using?
Answer:
i have been down this road before and here's my 2¢...
you obviously need to cool the room. typically equipment closets have their
own zone/thermostat. a free standing air conditioner is problematic for a
couple of reasons. they work by extracting water from the air and so need
their reservoir emptied regularly (daily) or they stop functioning. cheap
ones, and most are cheap, sometimes just fail which results in a pool of
water all over the floor. so you need to put the free standing ac in a pan
and/or get all the other equipment off of the floor. the only portable ac
that i would trust near servers are made by movincool and cost upwards of
$2500. and they are huge and require at least one 8" duct to exhaust hot
air (ideally two ducts, one intake and one out put). plus these things are
noisy. on the plus side these units have an optional pump kit that allows
you to pump the water from the machine to a drain elsewhere in the building
(instead of empting the water bucket daily). given your description, the
only thing i can suggest is that you install a through the wall type air
conditioner in your outside wall. it seems like it would be the most
practical solution and does not require the maintenance, space, or expense
demanded by a free standing unit. it will also be quieter than a
freestanding unit.
At $850 ea plus $250 ish for the parallel kit, they weren't cheap (free
shipping - no sales tax!). However, in comparison to my
Craftsman/Generac 4000XL "portable", they are far quieter, easier to
start, much smaller/lighter, use much less fuel combined, and too much
more to detail here....
