I recently saw this portable air conditioner (9000 BTU) at Fry's for $499. If
you have experience with it, will you mind sharing it? Any other
recommendations?

For $499.00 you can buy any brand 10,000 btu window units and really
pick the better brand you know. Whirlpool / Roper / Emerson / Fredrick / and
so on. When paing top dollar it's not really good thinking to test
newcomers. Now maybe at a deep discount maybe.
I've heard some great stories like that from people I know who work retail.
I used to know someone that could get me the returned items at a huge
discount too. I got an $800 portable ac/heater in one for about $200 and a
christmas tree with bits of tinsil still on it from the last owner for $100
off retail cost. I could care less if someone used it for 3 weeks at that
kind of discount, and I got free tinsil.
