Question:
it's that time of year again...summertime in New York
City. And of course my el cheapo Panasonic CW-C70RU air
conditioner is acting up again.
Now it's *icing*. That's right. The unit pulls the air in
through the front (that's where the filter is, which I've
thoroughly cleaned, btw), and then it passes through a steel
mesh, which I think is the actual cooling unit. That's
what's icing up--after about 4 hours of use. Gets so much
ice on it that the thing stops working.
Why would it do that? Anyone has an opinion?
Answer:
If the evaporator (cooling) coil is icing/frosting up totally, it is either
too cold inside or outside to run the unit (needs to be above 70° F both
inside and out to use it) or poor air flow (ie. something blocking the cold
air exhaust like curtains, dirty air filter, etc.).
If it is only partially icing/frosting, the unit is likely short of
refrigerant and needs service.
If it is less that 5 years old a refrigerant problem will usually be
covered by the warranty. If older it is usualy an expensive ($150+?)
repair.
