Question:
I want to install some kind of air conditioner to cool a 320 sq. foot
room, and it looks like the best option will be a "mini-split" style
A/C unit like the Mitsubishi Mr. Slim.
I called around to some local installers a few days ago and generally
found these phone conversations to be uninformative. So I was wondering
if anyone had any
rough idea how much it would cost to purchase a mini-split system and
how much it would probably cost to have it installed.
I am guessing the installation cost will be exhorbitant, and thus I am
also wondering if I can install it myself. Anybody have any
experience installing these things without professional assistance? I
can easily attach the components to their appropriate locations, and
run the refrigerant pipes, but are there elements to the installation
process (such as establishing the correct pressure in the line) that
must be done by a professional?
If I ultimately cannot afford to go the mini-split route, can anyone
recommend any decent portable units (where you run an air outflow hose
through a window or something...no installation to speak of) that
might work on a 320 sq. foot room?
Answer:
Mitsubishi Mr. Slim is good units..
Actually, the install time is short, and labor costs are not that bad..its
cheaper to install one of these, labor wise, than a standard split system in
most cases, unless you have some odd installation. The systems dont work
like a standard split..metering takes place in the outdoor unit, and you
almost have to forget what you know, and learn how it works. Also, if you
have never done one, the swuction line from the indoor unit to the lineset
is enough to keep you busy all day
Since none of the units come with precharged linesets here, without a EPA
608, your pretty much screwed by law..and charging these units takes a bit
of practice, as again, metering takes place outside, and its a bit different
than a split. Also, not to be a smartass, but unless you have all the tools
to get it installed, its much cheaper to have a tech come out and run
that...
Portables are a pita most of the time....and if its only 320SF, you might
want to look into a window unit, instead of the mini.
