and died itself.)
am i doing something wrong ?
or am i missing something in the equation somewhere ?
Answer:
The purpose of a second battery, and a stiffening capacitor are
different. Without getting technical, a capacitor, compared to a battery,
is able to discharge and recharge at a much faster rate. I like to
consider the purpose of a stiffening cap, much like that big bag on a set
of bagpipes. It helps smoothen everything out. However on the bagpipes
this is because the input has to take a breath, in your stereo, the
system's demands increase too quickly for the car to supply to power.
Now the purpose of the second battery is different. Most people will agree
(I hope) that a second battery is only needed if you plan on playing your
system with the car off. Also consider the logistical differences between
putting in a cap and a battery.
A more powerfull alternator is a good step. If your car doesn't have
things like Air Conditioning, but a model was made with it, there is a
good chance there is a more powerfull alternator made that can be dropped
in without any mods. You could also look into getting you current one
rewound.
My advice is start with what you have. Check your wiring, make sure it is
of ample size, and in good condition. then move onto things like the
alternator and a stiffening cap.
