Question:
I'd like to install a 7000 BTU window air conditioner in my fireplace. I
have casement windows which won't take the AC easily, and I don't need
or want to get an expensive through the wall solution. Anyway, in
Ottawa, ON it doesn't normally get that hot that often -- recent
exception, of course!
Any comments on if this will work satisfactorily, and if so, any hazards
to watch out for (other than fresh air starvation of the gas hot water
heater in the basement)? I can probably run a flexible hose from the ash
put cleanout to the basement window (1.5 m away) to eliminate any risk
here.
Answer:
It may work ! You'll need to have some sort of deal to catch the
condensate water. Perhaps it could run down the ash pit, or catch it with a
coal bucket, and empty daily. You could use the soggy ash for fertilize.
Your chimney draws that good in the summer huh? Mine don't, matter of fact
even in mild weather in the winter I have to heat up the chimney with much
higher temperature difference than your talking, but I'm not that far North.
after thinking about it, why don't you just install the damn thing in a
window on the outside of the house and make an adapter? Since your so handy
with tools. Then when this unusual weather leaves take it down.
I read somehwere recently about a combination gas log/ ac unit that inserted
into fireplace!
It seems the warm condenser air could not hurt the chimney by any means....
So why not?
