Home Central Air conditioning: Filters for Vent openings?

Question:
Home Central Air conditioning: Filters for Vent openings?
Just wondering if any of you know if a filter is required for these. I just bought a house. The first floor has filters installed, but the second floor doesn't. What's the benefits for having/not having a filter?

Answer:
Normally one filter is all that is required, and is centrally located in the return duct. Adding filters in the (supply ?) registers only restricts airflow, and will lead to problems with the equipment i.e. freeze up of cooling coil during cooling mode, and overheating of unit during heating mode
