Question:
Anyone knows where i can find a new or used Air-conditioner for my
Airstream?
Answer:
If you have an armstrong air conditioner, they are out of business,
but the compressor and many other parts are standard enough to be
replaced with parts available today. If the compressor is shot, you
have to ask yourself if you want to put a new compressor in an old air
conditioner or buy new.
I recommend new.
There are only two manufacturers of RV air conditioners today:
Dometic and Coleman.
New Airstreams come with Dometic and that is what I bought when I
replaced the Armstrong air conditioner in my 1973 Airstream last year.
I bought a Dometic Penguin heat pump, and like it very much.
I bought mine from a fellow with a mobile shop who came to my site and
installed it. I paid quite a bit for the convenience of having him
come to me. If you are willing to take your rig to the installer,
you could have it installed for about $100. You should be able to
buy a air-conditioner for $500-$800 depending on the model.
If you are handy with mechanical things, you might be able to install
it yourself. The 14" x 14" inch opening is quite standard. Of course
the Airstream roof is curved and the air-conditioner is flat, so that
means a bit more work for the installer.
