Casement Window Air Conditioner

Question:
I are buying a house that has Andersen Casement Crank out windows through out the entire house. I know they make air conditioners that fit casement windows. My only question is how do I go about installing the air conditioner? I assume I need to remove the entire window pane. How difficult is this to do? Has anybody else installed an air conditioner in an Andersen casement window?

Answer:
I installed a Hampton Bay unit in a casement window. I just removed the crank and swung the window out against the house but left it on the frame. I tied the window back so it would not be blown by the wind. I constructed a
2x4 support on the outside so that the AC unit would just rest on the frame but not put any weight on it. I just did not trust the factory brackets.
The H.B. unit is about 14.5" W x 21" H x 25" D and cost me about $400.00 (2 years ago). Also HB only makes 1 model in casement style so it may not be the best size (cooling capacity) for your room? It was way oversized for the room where I had it installed. Later we had vinyl double pane windows
(retro type) installed with sliders instead of casement. I still used the same AC unit there and my custom support let me install the AC without touching the vinyl frame. If you think you will replace your windows in the near future than I would advise holding off on the AC unit. New windows will allow you to use a standard and much cheaper unit that has the correct cooling capacity.
