Question:
Can you recharge a window air conditioner with new freon like you can a
car? If so, where do I take it? Our window air conditioner is pretty
old, and doesn't put out much cold anymore.
Answer:
It is a sealed system. Therefore, to recharge it, you need to puncture
the tubing, etc. Not normally a DIY project even if you could get the
Freon. Also, your problem may have nothing to do with low Freon.
If it uses plain old R12 Freon, don't bother it will cost more than its
worth. If it needs a simple recharging, you can see if its economical,
if not just get a new one. I have an ancient Emerson Quiet Kool that
thankfully holds up. If its still old R12, it will probably cost quite
a bit. If its R22 it might be less. If the compressor is shot, forget
it as well. Costs of repairs probably more than a new AC.
