Question:
Saw an article in the Wall Street Journal about portable air conditioners
and Delonghi seems to have started the concept in 1984. I like the fact that
there is no manual empty of water collection on these units and they appear
to be up to the task of running in server rooms, as that's one of the
applications the company says the units are well suited for. Anybody know
anything about them or have any experience with the units? We're looking at
PAC-210 or 290 with 7500-8500 BTU for a room that will probably be no larger
than 5' or 6' x 8' or 10'. Owner of the building says we can put a 3.5 in
hole in the wall to vent and plug it when we leave so it looks to be a
workable short term solution. I'm also open to ideas if this isn't the best
solution based on our limited time frame in the building
Answer:
Actually, it's a bit of both. The fact that we'll be here less than a year
and my boss sees it as a disposable room, the fact that the portable can be
had for about 1000.00 and possibly be repurposed at the new building, the
fact that I'm a computer guy and not a HVAC guy are all limitations and
constraints with which I'm operating.
So you're right, given the budget I have, to put the room in that I want, in
a building that we are leaving in a year is not the best of circumstances.
Unfortunately what I've just described can also be said of almost every new
technology decision that I have to make i.e. How can we get an adequate
return on investment on a technology or a box that may well be obsolete in 2
years. Fortunately I have the training to make those choices, but thought I
would rely on the good will of this group to at least give me a jump start
in the right direction in the area of your expertise. So in the end what I'm
looking to do is set it up as close to proper as I can get on budget and
having to weigh in the factor that we are leaving the building in a year
