Question:
How do other districts handle summer school for high schoolers? Is there
a tuition charged? Is it considered a usual service of the district or
a student's responsibility? Because he/she was screwing around and
shouldn't need summer school in the first place? Or?
Answer:
Younger teachers might assume that schools are air conditioned
nowadays. However these people are in for a shock if
they ever came to my old district and saw the decrepit condition of the
schools, many of which were built around the turn of the century (the
LAST century) and simply cannot be retrofit for airconditioning. Our
oldest school was featured in the local paper last week. It was built
around the time of ABRAHAM LINCOLN!!!! and is still in use today.
The other thing about the city schools is the fact that the money to
retrofit them is just not there. So, when they run short of funding,
politics plays an important role in which ones get the necessary
ductwork and machinery and which ones are put on the back burner. In
the 90's they promised to air condition both major high schools. In the
end they air conditioned only one high school...the other one...not
mine. That's the one with the nationally ranked basketball program and
probably the best player in the nation, and it's considered the
flagship high school for the city, even though their test scores,
SAT's, and attendance is about the same as my school. So, if there is
funding, a lot of times they got it and we didn't.
Then the next summer, If you guessed the air conditioned school, guess again.
The next summer after they air conditioned the one high school, they put summer school
into the one that was NOT air conditioned.
