Question:
I am planning to build a wooden support base for a window air conditioner.
The window is aluminum slide from right to left.
This window is second story bedroom.
There is a small 3 inch ledge in the inside of the window.
I am looking at the Sears small window air conditioner (around 5000btu).
Is there any ready made window support (adjustable) for this kind of air
conditioner?
Answer:
I did this last year. All you need is a board or piece of sturdy
plywood to form the platform, sticking out a foot or so, and one or
more diagonal brace(s) underneath. Probably two is better. For the
brace(s) you could use those pre-made wooden shelf supports they have
at the home improvement stores. The brace(s) must be well fastened to
the shelf but need not be fastened to the outside wall, they will just
press against it. Most importantly, the forward edge of the platform
must be well fastened to the windowsill -- it will want to slip out.
The air conditioner falling out a second floor window could do serious damage to
what/whoever is underneath.
