Question:
Can you recharge a window air conditioner with new freon like you can the
air conditioner in a car? If so, where can I get it done? Our air
conditioner is a little old, and doesn't put out much cold anymore. We
don't use it enough to warrant purchasing a new one, so I would like to
make this one work a little better.
Answer:
An appliance dealer with certified repair people should be able to do
it. But often with window units, the problem isn't low charge but dirty.
Those little sealed systems rarely leak but the outdoor coil is wet from
the condensate and often plugs up. But that should be part of their
service so find someone who will check it out
If a window A/C needs refrigerant added to it,then it has a leak which
must be repaired. The refrigeration system in a window shaker is
sealed, unlike that in an auto A/C.
There are several reasons why a window A/C may not be performing up to
snuff, for example dirty condenser or evaporator, faulty temperature
control, inefficient fan motor or compressor, etc. All these things are more
likely to occur than a refrigerant leak in a sealed system.
A certified refrigeration technician is the person you want to call.He
can check all the above, and if system repair and recharge really is
required,he is EPA certified capable of doing so in accordance with the
existing regulations
